The Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum

An affiliate of the Egan Maritime Institute, the Nantucket Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum is a small, seasonal exhibit dedicated to the history of shipwrecks off the island’s coast. Although the museum’s season ends on October 9th, the grounds are open to the public year-round. Offering impressive views of the surroundings, this is a beautiful location for a picnic or birdwatching on the marsh. Visitors can get a free ride to the museum from Town on the Museum’s daily shuttle.

For breathtaking 360-degree views of Nantucket, visit Altar Rock. This trail is popular among locals, with bikers and walkers frequenting it daily. There are few points of elevation around Nantucket, but Altar Rock offers beautiful hills that take you up to 108 feet above sea level. A dirt path will lead you to the summit, where you will find sweeping views that stretch out in every direction. The natural landmark offers a perspective of Nantucket you won’t find anywhere else, a view of the island’s diverse landscapes from the coastline to the forest and the moors.

Polpis Harbor

An ideal spot to launch your boat and sail into the inviting waters of the Harbor, Polpis is a more peaceful locale than the busy docks in Town. Polpis Harbor has its own narrow channel that leads into the harbor, with a mooring field in the east lobe. You’ll find the waters here are much calmer, making it a sailor's haven.

Reyes Pond

This Nantucket Land Bank property offers a beautiful hike through wetlands and elevated marshes. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of Altar Rock, the observatory, and the cranberry bogs. The former farmland was restored in recent years, creating a man-made pond and introducing a variety of trees from around the world. You will find painted turtles, irises, and swamp azalea, among other wetland vegetation. Open to the public, Reyes Pond is a great place to explore beautiful botanicals.
